Ukraine, Russia swap over 200 prisoners
Ukraine's president attributed the swap to the 'necessary momentum' provided by a recent invasion of Russian territory
Ukraine and Russia announced Saturday a prisoner exchange that repatriated over 200 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a statement and video announcing the return of 82 privates and sergeants as well as 21 officers released from Russian captivity, The Hill reported.
Zelensky said Russia had held many of the prisoners since 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Prisoners released in the swap included members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, border agents, police officers, and Defense and Security Forces soldiers.
The Ukrainian prisoners hailed from the Kyiv and Donetsk regions, with some captured in Kharkiv and Kherson.
Zelensky said some prisoners were seriously injured and will receive medical care.
"Thanks to our exchange team for their work. And my deep gratitude to all our brave combat brigades who continue to contribute to the 'exchange fund' for our country," Zelensky said.
Zelensky attributed the prisoner swap to Ukraine's recent military operation in Kursk, Russia, for providing the "necessary momentum."
The Russian Defense Ministry reported the release of 103 Russian servicemembers by Ukraine.
"Currently, all Russian servicemen are in the territory of the Republic of Belarus, where they are provided with the necessary psychological and medical assistance, as well as the opportunity to contact their relatives," Russia said.
