A woman was arrested in connection to an alleged plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's intelligence agency said Monday.

The woman is accused of "preparing a Russian airstrike in the Mykolaiv region during the visit of the President of Ukraine," the Security Service of Ukraine said, as translated.

The suspect attempted to establish Zelensky's itinerary while he visited the region of Mykolaiv, near the Black Sea in southern Ukraine, officials said. Russians planned on using this information to launch a "massive air strike" in the area, according to Ukraine, which has been fighting Russia since Moscow invaded in February 2022.

The woman was caught "red-handed" while attempting to pass on intelligence to Russia, the security service also said.

She faces up to 12 years in prison.

The news comes as Russian forces attack the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson and the northeast border areas in the Kharkiv region.
