A subway overpass in Mexico City collapsed late Monday night, killing at least 23 and injuring 70 others.

The collapse occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time when a support beam gave way, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said.

The overpass and the subway train it was supporting fell unto a road underneath, trapping and injuring motorists.

On Tuesday morning, rescue and recovery teams were still try to determine whether passengers were trapped in a subway car dangling from the elevated overpass, according to the Associated Press.

"There are unfortunately children among the dead," Sheinbaum said, though she did not specify how many.
