A major earthquake that struck the Pacific Ring of Fire off the coast of Mexico near the Guatemala border on Friday has sparked tsunami threats for the coasts of both countries. 

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck at 9:48 a.m. ET, and it was reported at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. 

A tsunami threat was issued for Mexico and Guatemala within 186 miles of the earthquake's epicenter, Fox News reported. 

Friday's quake was just the latest in a string of large earthquakes in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is a 25,000 belt of volcanoes and earthquake zones surrounding much of the Pacific Ocean.
