At least 31 people have died and more than 50 are injured following a stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu, Indian state officials said on Saturday. 

The deaths occurred at the Karur district during a mass gathering for Tamil film star-turned-politician Vijay, who is campaigning ahead of state elections.  

Huge crowds of people had assembled to listen to him speak.
