Mexico says it is investigating whether US violated its sovereignty with 2024 arrest of 'El Mayo'

The probe comes after the FBI agreed to display the private plane that brought Zambada into the U.S. for his arrest in the War Eagles Air Museum in Texas.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that her country is investigating whether the United States violated Mexican sovereignty in the 2024 capture of Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.

The probe comes after the FBI agreed to display the private plane that brought Zambada into the U.S. for his arrest in the War Eagles Air Museum in Texas. The plane also carried Joaquin Guzman-Lopez, the son of notorious narco leader "El Chapo" Guzman, into the U.S.

Guzman-Lopez admitted in December that he helped kidnap Zambada by ambushing him, drugging him and loading him onto the plane. The move was intended to win favor with U.S. authorities. The US Embassy in Mexico said in 2024 that no US agency participated in the operation, according to Agence France-Presse

"If one of the U.S. agencies participated in this operation, they would be violating international treaties and the (Mexican) constitution," Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference. "What agreements did that agency have, or who else participated with the criminal group? In this case, everything seems to indicate that the ambassador [Ken Salazar] lied."

The news comes as Mexico also investigates the presence of two CIA agents in the country in April, who were killed in an anti-drug operation after being in Mexico without authorization from the country's federal government.

The investigation is looking into whether the presence of the agents represented a violation of national security laws.
