Iran's Fars news agency said that there was no direct communication with the U.S. or through intermediaries

Iran on Monday denied having talks with the U.S. and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, after President Trump said they were, according to a report.

Iran's Tasnim news agency cited an Iranian official saying that the Strait of Hormuz will not return to pre-war conditions and energy markets will remain unsettled, adding that there are not currently any negotiations with the U.S., Reuters reported.

President Trump backed down from attacking critical Iranian energy infrastructure amid financial market pressure, according to Tasnim, warning that Iran would continue to defend itself until it achieves deterrence.

Trump said Monday that the U.S. and Iran had "productive" talks, and that he ordered the military to postpone strikes on Iranian power plants for five days.

After Trump's post, Iran's Fars news agency said that there was no direct communication with the U.S. or through intermediaries.

Fars cited an unnamed source that said Trump had retreated after hearing that Iran would respond by attacking all power plants in the Middle East.

According to an anonymous source, the Trump administration had kept Israel informed of its talks with Iran, and that the Israel Defense Forces would likely follow the U.S. military in suspending any targeting of Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on U.S. talks with Iran or the Trump administration's decision to hold off on striking some Iranian targets.
