Netanyahu says deadly airstrike that hit Rafah was a 'tragic mistake'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the airstrike that hit civilians in Rafah was a "tragic mistake" that is being investigated. 

The airstrike occurred a few hours after Hamas claimed it fired rockets from Gaza towards Israel, according to CBS News.

Gaza officials said at least 45 people were killed, including displaced Palestinians who were living in tents.

Netanyahu addressed the Israeli parliament where he said, "despite our utmost efforts not to harm innocent civilians, last night, there was a tragic mistake. We are investigating the incident and will obtain a conclusion because this is our policy."

IDF officials said that the attack took out two senior commanders in Hamas, the BBC reports.

"The strike was carried out against legitimate targets under international law, through the use of precise munitions and on the basis of precise intelligence that indicated Hamas' use of the area," the IDF wrote in a statement on the social media platform, X.

As of now, President Joe Biden has not made a statement on the airstrike.
