Trump celebrates first American Pope, hopes for meeting

Prevost was elected on the second day of the Papal Conclave following the death of Pope Francis.

President Donald Trump on Thursday congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as Pope, expressing excitement at the election of an American to the office and a desire to soon meet the new Catholic leader.

"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country," he posted. "I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!"
