Navy infecting 'at-risk' monkeys with lethal pathogens after CDC ordered to stop: watchdog

"The Navy lab spent another $200,000 to buy more monkeys as recently as August 2025," months before RFK Jr. reportedly authorized deputy to end CDC monkey research, White Coat Waste Project investigation finds.

As Congress turns on allegedly cruel and pointless medical testing involving dogs and cats, at least one part of the Trump administration is plowing ahead with dangerous pathogen research on animals not typically kept as pets, according to an anti-testing watchdog.

The White Coat Waste Project shared the results of its investigation into the Naval Medical Research Unit in Peru and its tests on Nancy Ma's night monkeys, a small "at-risk" primate species with dwindling numbers due to "rampant illegal capture for experimentation."

The Navy ended "inhumane" research on dogs and cats this spring following another WCW investigation, which the Navy credited with prompting the change

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reportedly ending all monkey research as of this fall under a directive from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., passed through a deputy, Science reported.

NAMRU South, as it's known, spent another $200,000 to buy more monkeys in August, according to the WCW investigation, which included photos and video of the monkeys "being caged, tattooed, and prepared for shipment to NAMRU South" from a "captive-breeding facility run by the National University of San Marcos."

They are injected with deadly pathogens including diarrheal diseases, dengue, malaria and E. coli, paid for with $28 million in active Department of Defense grants and contracts, one of them a $100,000 contract from the Biden administration that runs through 2028, according to records obtained by WCW.

The group emphasized "Dr. Fauci’s National Institutes of Health division," the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, as well as the CDC, Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Agency for International Development, also funded the research. WCW is a vocal critic of Anthony Fauci.

The group filed a Freedom of Information Act request for NAMRU South's documentation of its "cruel and wasteful monkey experiments," WCW said. "Taxpayers should never be forced to bankroll monkey experiments overseas—especially at a high-risk military bioagent lab."
