Trump pauses tariffs on Mexico goods after talk with country's President Sheinbaum
Sheinbaum said both of them came to an agreement regarding trade and security
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that tariffs will be paused for one month after a call with President Donald Trump.
She said both of them came to an agreement regarding trade and security.
"We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty," Sheinbaum wrote on the social media platform, X.
She said Mexico will reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to prevent drug trafficking.
Trump said on TRUTH Social that he looks forward to more negotiations with Sheinbaum.
"We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico," Trump said.
The White House announced on Saturday Trump would impose 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% on Chinese imports.
Trump cited illegal immigration, drug trafficking and the fentanyl crisis as reasons for the tariffs.
He said in a separate TRUTH Social Post that he would be speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the tariffs later Monday.
