Coronavirus takes toll on economy, jobless applications doubled last week's 3.3 million number
A record-number 6.6 million Americans applied last week for unemployment, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The number is double the 3.3 million who applied last week, as the shuttering of the U.S. economy as a result of the coronavirus continues to take its toll.
Analysts has projected the number of people applying last week for jobless benefits would only be as high as 5 million.
