Andy Harris replaces Bob Good as chairman of conservative House Freedom Caucus
Harris will now serve as chairman through 2024, and a new leader will be elected again next year.
Maryland GOP Rep. Andy Harris was elected on Tuesday night as the new chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, replacing former chairman Bob Good, who lost his primary earlier this year.
Good officially resigned as the caucus chairman last week, fulfilling a promise he made that he would resign if he lost a recount to his primary challenge in Virginia to John McGuire. If he had won reelection, Good would have remained the chairman through December of 2025.
Harris' election occurred during the weekly caucus meeting, Just the News has confirmed. The vote occurred after former House Freedom chairman Andy Biggs, who was the other finalist for the position, withdrew his bid for the leadership role. Harris will now serve as chairman through 2024, and a new leader will be elected again next year.
The congressman has served in the House since 2011, and is the chairman of a House Appropriations subcommittee. The House Freedom Caucus, which is known for being a more hardline conservative caucus, was established in 2015 and has been a vocal challenger for many GOP leaders.
