Black Republicans target Swalwell's claim that GOP will ban interracial marriage
"I'm in an interracial marriage," said one candidate from Texas.
Florida Rep. Byron Donalds and Wesley Hunt, a congressional candidate in Texas – both black Republicans – on Tuesday night tore into Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell for claiming the GOP want to ban interracial marriage.
"The Republicans won't stop with banning abortion," Swalwell tweeted Monday after the publication of the Supreme Court draft opinion that could reverse Roe v. Wade. "They want to ban interracial marriage. Do you want to save that? Well, then you should probably vote."
On Tuesday, Hunt responded, "Hi Eric, my name is Wesley Hunt, I’m a Republican nominee in a congressional district that is 70% white. I’m black, I’m in an interracial marriage, and my wife and I have two biracial daughters. Republicans are celebrating diversity while white liberals like yourself race-bait."
Hunt will likely be elected to Congress in November. He is running in a solidly red district.
Donalds, a freshman member, similarly dismissed the California Democrat's statement, which was also clearly an attempt to energize liberal voters in this year's midterm elections. "You are such a fool. What is wrong with you! More gaslighting from the radical left!"
Swalwell critics also point out that conservative Justice Clarence Thomas is in an interracial marriage.
Swalwell's claim was just part of Democrats rhetorical barrage in response to the leaked draft, which could reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling that states women have a constitutional right to abortion.
According to a Gallup survey conducted in 2021, 94% of Americans approve of interracial marriage.
The draft's legitimacy was confirmed Tuesday, but Chief Justice John Roberts underscored that "it does not represent a decision by the court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case."
In the draft, Justice Samuel Alito wrote, "It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives."
