New York GOP Rep. George Santos is facing a re-opened investigation by Brazilian authorities as he begins his first term in Congress this week, according to media reports.

The newly minted congressman—whose life has come under scrutiny due to multiple alleged falsehoods the representative has reportedly promulgated during his career—will face possible prosecution from Brazilian officials who "intend to revive fraud charges against [against him] and will seek his formal response," according to the New York Times.

The investigation stems from an alleged 2008 incident involving a stolen checkbook. The matter "had been suspended for the better part of a decade because the police were unable to locate him," according to the Times.

With Santos taking up residence in D.C. this week, "a formal request will be made to the U.S. Justice Department to notify him of the charges," a Rio de Janeiro prosecutor spokeswoman told the newspaper.

Santos reportedly spent time in Brazil following high school.
