Colorado Democrat says she sought treatment for depression at Walter Reed
Caraveo is one of a handful of Democratic lawmakers who have been open about their struggles with mental health, including Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who was hospitalized for depression at Walter Reed last year.
Colorado Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo revealed on Monday that she sought treatment for symptoms of depression at the Walter Reed Medical Center recently.
Caraveo, who is a pediatrician, is one of a handful of Democratic lawmakers who have been open about their struggles with mental health, including Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who was hospitalized for depression at Walter Reed for six weeks.
The congresswoman said she was speaking out about her recent treatment “because I believe we need to de-stigmatize mental illness in Colorado, and across the country."
“In recent months, my depression became more severe, so I decided to take my own advice and seek treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center,” Caraveo said in a statement posted to X. "It is my hope that the millions of people who struggle with depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety or any other mental health issues seek help."
Caraveo thanked her medical team at Walter Reed in the statement, saying she received the kind of care that "every American deserves," and vowed to keep fighting for better access to mental health counseling and services.
The congresswoman's message was applauded by fellow Colorado Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette, who said she "admires" Caraveo's "strength and courage."
"We must work together to end the stigma around mental health care," Degette added, according to Politico.
