Conservatives block bills on House floor after opposing Biden and McCarthy debt limit deal
The bills that conservatives joined to Democrats to halt included legislation to block a ban on gas stoves as well as regulatory reform.
A group of 11 conservative lawmakers from the House Freedom Caucus on Tuesday joined Democrats to shoot down an effort from GOP leadership to advance a series of the bills on the House floor.
The move to block the bills was a response to the debt limit legislation that passed the House after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and President Biden reached an agreement.
The bills that conservatives joined to Democrats to halt included legislation to block federal funds from applying to a ban on gas stoves as well as regulatory reform.
“We took a stand in January to end the era of the imperial Speakership and we’re concerned that the fundamental commitments that allowed Kevin McCarthy to assume the Speakership have been violated as a consequence of the debt limit deal," said Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz.
