Cruz invites Durbin to testify on the witness bench next to Ketanji Brown Jackson
Durbin interrupted Cruz's line of questioning and asked him to let Jackson answer. Cruz told Durbin she was dodging his questions.
Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin on Wednesday that he should testify on the witness stand next to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Cruz was asking a series of questions about Jackson's sentencing of 28 months or less in certain child pornography cases.
"Would you please let her respond?" Durbin interjecting during Cruz's time at the hearing.
Cruz said, "No, not if she's not going to answer my question."
"You should give her an opportunity to respond," Durbin said back.
Cruz told Durbin he was not getting a clear answer from the judge about the sentencing decisions in the cases he was describing to her.
"There's no point in responding. He's going to interrupt you," Durbin said.
"If you don't like your witness's answers, you're welcome to provide your own. She is declining to answer the question. And Chairman Durbin, if you want to join her on the bench you can," Cruz said. "I am not interrupting your questioning."
In United States v. Hawkins, Jackson sentenced 18-year-old Wesley Hawkins, who had been in possession of about sexual abuse images and videos involving children, to three months in jail. Prosecutors initially had recommended at least 24 months.
Cruz followed-up on Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley's previous questioning about this case.
“Senator, I have said what I am going to say about these cases," Jackson said.
