Democrat-led House Jan. 6 committee to resume public hearings, as members return from August recess

The Democrat-led House Jan. 6 committee is set to resume its public hearings, as chamber members return to Capitol Hill on Tuesday from August recess. 

Committee members reportedly over the roughly six-week recess interviewed witnesses and tried to get cooperation from others including former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former Vice President Mike Pence.

The first hearing could come as early as Sept. 28, with the investigation, which concludes in 16 weeks, now focusing more on former President Trump’s connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to The Hill newspaper.

In a departure from House norms, Speaker Nancy Pelosi last year rejected two of the five House Republican picks for the panel, prompting GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to pull all five of his party's choices from the committee. Pelosi then handpicked two anti-Trump Republicans to join the seven Democrats on the committee.
