Lead impeachment manager, Democrat Rep. Raskin says Electoral College 'accident waiting to happen'

Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin says the Electoral College, the constitutional process for electing the president, is "an accident waiting to happen."

Raskin, the lead manager in the Democrat-led House's second impeachment of then-President Trump, said during an interview Friday with MSNBC that the Electoral College is "vulnerable to strategic bad-faith actors," such as the former president.

The Jan. 6, 2021, riot was largely an attempt to disrupt and stop Congress from certifying the college's results for the 2020 presidential election that Trump lost.

Raskin, also a constitutional law professor, said the United States needs to implement "changes to the criminal code" to account for the possibility of losing presidents attempting to seize the Oval Office through the college. He also said "there are federal statutes out there that will do the job."

"We have to look at the way that the electoral system itself is vulnerable to strategic bad faith actors like Donald Trump," the Maryland lawmaker said. "The Electoral College is an accident waiting to happen and we have to deal with that at some point in American history. Why not now?"
