Gabbard clears final procedural hurdle before full confirmation vote
The 52-45 vote was along party lines, according to Reuters, which saw all Republicans vote to advance the controversial nominee. Trump nominated Gabbard, who was previously a Democrat before she changed parties in November of last year.
The Senate on Monday night voted to invoke cloture on President Donald Trump's nominee for director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, clearing the way for her to be confirmed later in the week.
The 52-46 vote was along party lines, according to NBC News, which saw all Republicans vote to advance the controversial nominee. Trump nominated Gabbard, who was previously a Democrat before she changed parties in November of last year.
Gabbard advanced out of committee last week in another party-line vote, which saw all nine Republicans on the panel support her while eight Democrats rejected the nomination. The advancement comes after a handful of GOP senators appeared hesitant to back her confirmation, but Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine., and Todd Young of Indiana later rallied behind her.
The nominee said during her confirmation hearing that if confirmed to the post she would work to restore trust and end politicization in the intelligence community.
Gabbard is expected to be confirmed later this week, on Wednesday.
