Gaetz says he won't resign from Congress, after more reports emerge, top staffer quits

GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz said Friday that he will not resign from Congress, hour after a top staffer quit amid more allegation related to the Justice Department's investigation into sex-trafficking allegations against the the Florida congressman.

Gaetz told The Hill that rumors he is resigning from office are "false" as he told them it's "very safe" to say he will not be retiring from office anytime soon.

Gaetz's comments come after communications director Luke Ball, according to MSNBC.

The Justice Department probe was made public Tuesday in a report by The New York Times. The probe reportedly centers on allegations about a 17-year-old female connected to Gaetz across state lines.

The 38-year-old Gaetz has denied the charges, arguing that he and his family are "victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name," according to Yahoo News.

Federal prosecutors are examining whether Gaetz and a political ally who is facing sex trafficking allegations may have paid underage girls or offered them gifts in exchange for sex, the Associated Press reported Friday, based on two people familiar with the matter.
