GOP congressman evacuates Americans from Haiti in third international rescue mission
Mills criticized the Biden administration for their handling of the crisis in Haiti as well as other foreign crises.
Florida Republican Rep. Cory Mills helped evacuate 10 Americans from Haiti, which is wracked by crime, marking his third international rescue mission during a foreign crisis since 2021.
Michigan GOP Rep. Lisa McClain helped coordinate the mission, which saw Mills evacuate 10 Americans who worked with the orphanage, "Have Faith Haiti," on Tuesday.
The volunteers were evacuated via helicopter in the dark during the early hours of Tuesday morning, and Mills still appeared on Capitol Hill for work on Wednesday.
Mills criticized the Biden administration for their handling of the crisis in Haiti as well as other foreign crises.
"There is no doubt there has been a clear pattern of abandonment of Americans by Joe Biden and this administration. If Americans are abroad and in trouble, I will continue to come to their aid," Mills said on X, formerly Twitter.
Mills also helped rescue an American mother and three children from Afghanistan in 2021, when the Biden administration withdrew from the country as it was seized by the Taliban. He also helped evacuate 255 Americans from Israel in October 2023, days after Hamas and other terrorists invaded the country.
Before his latest rescue mission, the Haitian orphanage had asked the State Department for help evacuating, and the agency said it was preparing an evacuation. However, that evacuation was for non-essential State Department employees, Mills said.
"This is sending a direct message that the federal government only cares about government, not about the American people. This is the wrong thing to say, and I can tell you, I don't subscribe to that," he told Fox News.
Have Faith founder Mitch Albom and his wife Janine Sabino were among those Americans evacuated by Mills from Haiti.
"My wife and I are safe tonight. Many Americans, Canadians, and others who are still stuck are not. The people of Haiti are not," Albom said.
