GOP-led House passes Police Our Border Act with 45 Democrat votes
"The Biden White House refuses to do its job to secure our border and our law enforcement agencies bear the cost. Today I voted for the Police Our Border Act to help correct that," wrote Rep. Celeste Maloy, R-Utah, on X.
The Police Our Border Act passed in the GOP-led House on Thursday 254-157 with the help of 54 votes from Democrats.
The bill would "require the Department of Justice to report to the Congress within 180 days of enactment on the experiences of federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement officers working on issues related to immigration at the southern border of the United States," according to a Congressional Budget Office report.
The CBO estimated that implementing the bill "would cost less than $500,000" over a 2024-2029 timeframe.
"The Biden White House refuses to do its job to secure our border and our law enforcement agencies bear the cost. Today I voted for the Police Our Border Act to help correct that," wrote Rep. Celeste Maloy, R-Utah, on X.
Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, R-N.Y., introduced the legislation, which he said would "mandate the Attorney General compile a report on the border crisis’s impacts on law enforcement agencies across the United States – quantifying the impacts of an ever-expanding crisis and allowing Congress the ability to know where best to direct future resources."
After the bill's passage, D’Esposito said the "ongoing crisis at America’s southern border disproportionately impacts the brave men and women of law enforcement who are forced to clean up the mess caused by President Biden’s failure to secure our nation."
“It is vital that Congress has a clear picture of the burden placed on law enforcement agencies across the United States as a result of President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas’s dereliction of duty, and the Police Our Border Act is a crucial step in compiling that data," he said in a statement.
