The GOP-led House is scheduled to vote Tuesday afternoon on the Laken Riley Act on Tuesday, according to the official schedule.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., is expected to schedule a vote after the bill passes the House, according to Punchbowl News.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and 50 Senate Republicans are cosponsoring the Laken Riley Act, which is a bill named after a student who was murdered by an illegal immigrant.
The bill provides law enforcement with more authority to detain illegal immigrants who have been accused of crimes.
If passed and signed into law, it would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to "detain certain non-U.S. nationals (aliens under federal law) who have been arrested for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting." The bill allows states to "sue the federal government for decisions or alleged failures related to immigration enforcement," according to an official summary of the legislation.
