GOP senators tell Blinken hand over Hunter Biden records, amid questions about role in laptop story

GOP Sens. Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley are demanding Secretary of State Antony Blinken hand over all records related to his correspondence with Hunter Biden following recent revelations Blinken perhaps lied to Congress about his conversations with the first son.

"On December 22, 2020, you provided false testimony to Congress during your voluntary transcribed interview," the senators write at the top of their letter sent Monday to Blinken.

When asked at the time whether he ever spoke with Biden on the phone, Blinken said, "Not that I recall."

He also said he had not spoken to Biden over email or text messages. 

The Hill testimony has recently come into question amid revelations that Blinken was behind a letter singed by 51 former and current U.S. intelligence officials, during President Biden's 2020 White House campaign, the stated the Hunter Biden laptop story was Russian disinformation.

Last month, former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell testified before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees that a conversation with Blinken "triggered" the October 2020 public statement.

Emails from Biden's laptop and the recent revelations indicate Blinken corresponded with Hunter Biden at least twice, appearing to contradicting his congressional testimony.

Reports also show Blinken's wife, Evan Ryan, communicated with Biden. 

"Because your testimony is inaccurate, Congress and the public must rely on your records as the source for information about your dealings with Hunter Biden," wrote Johnson, of Wisconsin, and Grassley, of Iowa.

"As such, you must preserve and provide all records, referring or relating to Hunter Biden, his business dealings, or his family’s business dealings, including but not limited to correspondence sent or received from your personal email accounts and phones, to include those of Ms. Ryan." 

The senators are requesting for the secretary and his wife to comply with their request by May 15. 

Johnson is the top Republican on the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and Grassley is the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.
