House Speaker Mike Johnson's proposed temporary spending bill to avoid a government shutdown includes a one-year farm bill extension and a payment to the family of the late California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

The farm bill, which is typically handled as separate five-year legislation, includes funding for food stamps, more formally known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

"This extension is in no way a substitute for passing a 5-year Farm Bill and we remain committed to working together to get it done next year," the House Agriculture Committee clarified on social media.

The leaders of the committee from both parties released a joint statement after the CR was announced.

“As negotiations on funding the government progress, we were able to come together to avoid a lapse in funding for critical agricultural programs and provide certainty to producers," they said on Sunday. "This extension is in no way a substitute for passing a 5-year Farm Bill and we remain committed to working together to get it done next year.”

The proposed Continuing Resolution (CR) also contains a "payment to Katherine Anne Feinstein, beneficiary of Dianne Feinstein, late Senator from the State of California, $174,000."

Some Republicans are coming out against the short-term spending bill.

"The current short-term funding proposal includes a 1-year extension of the Farm Bill (no reform), status quo policies, and status quo funding levels. Disappointing is as polite as I can muster," Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, said on X. "I will be voting NO. Hopefully, the consensus will result in a more reasonable bill."
