Mitt Romney proposes giving $1,000 check to every American adult amid coronavirus scare
The proposal is one of several from the Utah Republican senator
Sen. Mitt Romney wants the U.S. government to send a $1,000 check to every American adult amid the ongoing coronavirus health scare.
The Utah Republican included the idea among a list of proposals he believes Congress should pass to help Americans financially as the nation confronts the coronavirus.
“Every American adult should immediately receive $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” the senator’s press release says. “Congress took similar action during the 2001 and 2008 recessions.”
Romney also proposes temporarily making health insurance businesses cover telehealth services that are rendered for coronavirus-related issues, and then having the government pay insurance companies back to cover their associated expenses.
“To protect the health workforce and connect patients with providers, require all private insurance companies (individual, small- and large-group, and self-insured market) to cover telehealth services, if the reason for using telehealth services is related to COVID-19,” the press release explains. “The federal government would reimburse private plans for the full cost of services.”
The senator advocates taking steps to benefit students as well, like allowing recent college graduates to postpone paying off their student loans.
