Nadler drops bid to be top Democrat on House Judiciary and endorses Raskin
"As our country faces the return of Donald Trump, and the renewed threats to our democracy and our way of life that he represents, I am very confident that Jamie would ably lead the Judiciary Committee as we confront this growing danger," Nadler wrote in a statement.
New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler on Wednesday dropped his bid to remain the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, paving the way for a younger leader like Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin to take his place.
Raskin announced that he was challenging Nadler for the seat on Tuesday. Raskin is currently the ranking member on the House Oversight and Accountability committee. House Judiciary chairman is Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan.
Nadler, who said he will remain on the committee, endorsed Raskin to replace him as the committee's top Democrat.
"As our country faces the return of Donald Trump, and the renewed threats to our democracy and our way of life that he represents, I am very confident that Jamie would ably lead the Judiciary Committee as we confront this growing danger," Nadler wrote, per Politico.
"Although I will not be Ranking Member, I will still be an active member of the Committee, and I am eager to work alongside its new leadership in the battle to protect our most vulnerable communities and our most precious democratic ideals," he added.
