New Jersey's LaMonica McIver sworn in as newest House Democrat, replacing the late Donald Payne
McIver won a special election last week, defeating Republican businessman Carmen Bucco, who she will face again in November for a full-term. McIver will only serve the remainder of Payne's term this time, which ends in January.
Newly elected New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver was sworn into the House of Representatives on Monday night, replacing the late Democratic Rep. Donald Payne, who died of a heart attack in April at the age of 65.
McIver won a special election last week, defeating Republican businessman Carmen Bucco, who she will face again in November for a full term. McIver will only serve the remainder of Payne's term this time, which ends in January.
The new House Democrat praised her predecessor's legacy in comments on the House floor, but said she hoped to "blaze new trails together," and help the country in "realizing" its full promise.
“My predecessor, Congressman Donald M. Payne Jr., embodied the vibrant spirit of our city and the people he faithfully served," McIver said, per The Hill. "He was an example to many of us. As I stand before you tonight, I pay tribute to him and both deeply feel, and will always miss, his presence and his leadership."
McIver previously served on the Newark City Council since 2018, and even served as the Newark City Council president. She has also worked for the Montclair Public Schools as a personnel director. McIver said her priorities for the term include infrastructure, abortion rights, and "protecting our democracy."
The Democrat's victory was expected, and she is also expected to win the full term in November, because New Jersey's 10th district is a solidly blue seat.
