Schumer blasts Trump for 'peddling antisemitic stereotypes' in speech at Democratic convention
Schumer claimed Trump was antisemitic after he hosted a Holocaust denier at his Mar-a-Lago resort in 2022, and after he claimed the American Jewish community does not appreciate his stance or record on Israel.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday night blasted former President Donald Trump for peddling "antisemitic stereotypes" and fueling hate, during an address at the Democratic convention in Chicago.
Schumer, who is the highest-ranking Jewish Democrats in Congress, claimed Trump was antisemitic after he hosted a Holocaust denier at his Mar-a-Lago resort in 2022, and after he claimed the American Jewish community does not appreciate his stance or record on Israel.
“As the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in American history, I want my grandkids — and all grandkids — to never, never face discrimination because of who they are," Schumer said. "But Donald Trump — this is a guy who peddles antisemitic stereotypes."
The senator stated that Trump's prejudice expands beyond just the Jewish community, and slammed him for issuing a travel ban on people from certain countries during his presidency.
“Tonight, folks, I am wearing this blue square to stand up to antisemitism, to stand up to all hate,” Schumer said. “Our children, our grandchildren — no matter their race or creed or gender or family — deserve better than Donald Trump’s American carnage."
Schumer also predicted that Democrats will keep control of the Senate this November, reflecting on how Republicans were confident they would win the Senate during the midterms and yet the Senate still has a Democratic majority.
"I am telling all of you now: This year, we are going to hold the Senate again — and [we] are poised to pick up seats,” he concluded.
