Schumer praises Secret Service after 2nd Trump assassination attempt, floats more funding
"I’m glad the former president is safe, and I applaud the Secret Service and all first responders for acting quickly before anyone got hurt," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Monday praised the Secret Service and suggested Congress could provide the agency with additional funding in the wake of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
In remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer lauded the speed of law enforcement agencies in responding to the gunman, CNN reported.
“I will say what I have said many times before: there is no place in America for political violence of any kind,” Schumer said. “I’m glad the former president is safe, and I applaud the Secret Service and all first responders for acting quickly before anyone got hurt. As for the perpetrator, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
“We all must do our part to ensure an incident like this does not happen again. This means that Congress has a responsibility to ensure the Secret Service and all law enforcement have the resources they need to do their jobs. So, as we continue the appropriations process, if the Secret Service is in need of more resources, we are prepared to provide it for them, possibly in the upcoming funding agreement,” he added.
Schumer's comments followed calls from Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., to bolster security for Trump.
