Schumer says Mayorkas impeachment trial could start as early as next week

Schumer sent a letter to his colleagues where he warned them there would be a busy upcoming agenda.

Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer says the chamber's impeachment trial for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas could start as early as Thursday.

The New York lawmaker made the announcement Friday in a letter to fellow Democrat lawmakers in which he said GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to deliver the articles of impeachment for Mayorkas on Wednesday.

"Please be advised that all Senators will be sworn in as jurors in the trial the day after the articles are presented," Schumer's letter reads.

He also wrote Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray will preside over the trial.

Schumer says Johnson will send over two impeachment charges.

In February, the GOP-led House voted 214 to 213 to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of illegal immigration at the southern U.S. border.

“The evidence on both charges is clear, comprehensive, and compelling, and the House’s solemn act to impeach the first sitting Cabinet official in American history demands timely action by the Senate,” Johnson wrote in a letter to Schumer.
