Sen. Blumenthal to undergo surgery after fracturing femur at UConn parade
Even with a fractured femur, Blumenthal, 77, still managed to finish the parade on Saturday.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday after he fractured his femur during the UConn men’s basketball victory parade when someone videotaping him accidentally fell on him during the celebration.
Even with a fractured femur, Blumenthal, 77, still managed to finish the parade on Saturday in Hartford celebrating the University of Connecticut Huskies' victory over San Diego State in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
"What can I say, I love a parade!" the senator tweeted in response to fellow Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy, who pointed out how Blumenthal kept marching despite the fracture.
"I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade today. Routine surgery tomorrow just to make sure everything heals properly. I expect a full recovery!" Blumenthal said.
The person who fell on the senator was taking a video of him during the parade, according to News 12 Connecticut.
It is unclear when Blumenthal, who was first elected to the Senate in 2010, will be back at work.
The Senate has suffered from several notable absences recently, including Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who is recovering from a concussion, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who is being treated for depression, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who is recovering from shingles.
