Senate Democrats on Saturday blocked a Republican effort to attach a transgender sports ban provision to a voter ID bill backed by President Donald Trump, preventing it from advancing in the upper chamber.

The amendment, introduced by Tommy Tuberville, sought to add language to the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act that would prohibit transgender women from competing in women’s sports.
