Schumer sets April 11 for Senate impeachment trial for Mayorkas
Last month, the House voted to impeach Mayorkas 214 to 213.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday set April 11 as the date in his chamber for the impeachment trial for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
This comes after House Speaker Mike Johnson and other House Republicans informed Schumer that two impeachment charges will be sent to the Senate on April 10, according to ABC News.
Last month, the House voted 214 to 213 to to impeach Mayorkas, over his handling of illegal immigration at the southern U.S. border.
Schumer’s office told NBC News that senators will be sworn in as jurors for the trial after the articles are reviewed.
“The evidence on both charges is clear, comprehensive, and compelling, and the House’s solemn act to impeach the first sitting Cabinet official in American history demands timely action by the Senate,” Johnson wrote in a letter to Schumer.
Other Republicans that signed the letter included House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green R-Tenn., and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul R-Texas.
