The House Republicans' bill includes at least $4.5 trillion in tax cuts over the next 10 years, but it would only extend the tax cuts, not make them permanent.

Top Senate Republicans on Thursday are playing hardball with the budget reconciliation process, by vowing to only support legislation that includes a permanent extension of President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.

The House Republicans' bill includes at least $4.5 trillion in tax cuts over the next 10 years, but it would only extend the tax cuts, not make them permanent.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune led a group of eight other senators in sending a letter to Trump, notifying him of their objections to the extension. The letter was also copied to House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith.

“We will not support a tax package that only provides temporary relief from tax hikes,” the senators wrote, per The Hill. “A temporary extension of these pro-growth and pro-family policies is a missed opportunity.”

The House and Senate will both need to pass the same legislation in order for it to go to Trump's desk and take effect.

The chambers are also at odds on how to pass the legislation. The Senate is hoping to pass two budget bills that split Trump's priorities into one bill that focuses on the border and energy, and the second on taxes, while the House is trying to pass a single bill.

The Senate has already advanced one of its bills out of committee, but the House was expected to pass its bill on Thursday. It has not been passed so far.
