Senate GOP unites behind healthcare proposal as chamber prepares to vote Thursday on ACA subsidies
The Senate is expected to vote on the dueling proposals on Thursday, but neither is expected to pass.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced Tuesday that his party has rallied behind Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Mike Crapo of Idaho's joint proposal on Obamacare subsidies in a counter to Senate Democrats.
A vote on the possible extension of Obamacare subsidies was a key part of the deal to reopen the federal government last month, which ended the longest government shutdown in American history. Senate Democrats proposed a three-year extension last week on the subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year.
The Senate is expected to vote on the dueling proposals on Thursday, but neither is expected to pass, according to Fox News.
"This program desperately needs to be reformed," Thune said. "The Democrats have decided we're not going to do anything to reform it. And so we'll see where the votes are on Thursday. But we will have an alternative that we will put up that reflects the views of the Republicans here in the United States Senate about how to make health insurance more affordable in this country, how to ensure that it's not the insurance companies that are getting enriched, that it's actually benefiting the patient."
The Senate Republican proposal would end Affordable Care Act subsidies on schedule in favor of health savings accounts, which would divert the money that typically goes to insurers and send it to Americans through the savings account instead.
The bill also includes provisions that reduce federal Medicaid funding to states that cover illegal migrants, requires states to verify citizenship or eligible immigration status before someone can get Medicaid and a ban on federal Medicaid funding for gender transition services. It additionally bans taxpayer dollars from funding abortions through the HSAs, the outlet reported.
