Senate resumes talks on Ukraine funding-border security after weekend negotiations, no sign of deal
Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer has delayed senators' holiday recess in an attempt to hasten a deal
Senators resume work Monday after a long weekend on Capitol Hill trying to strike a deal on border-security and immigration policy that will pave the way for Ukraine aid, with any final vote now appearing unlikely until after New Years.
The chamber's Democrat and Republican negotiator on Sunday night acknowledged some weekend progress but also said a final vote anytime soon is not likely, according to Punchbowl News.
Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer has delayed members' holiday recess in an attempt to hasten a deal, amid the argument that delaying aid to Ukraine would severely hurt its efforts tp defeat Russian in its war against the country.
GOP senators say they wouldn’t vote to advance any foreign-aid bill without a legislative text in hand on the border-security and immigration provisions, Punchbowl also reports.
The news outlet also reports Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford, the lead GOP negotiator, said jointly that if Schumer moves forward with plans to hold a procedural vote this week, “it would not succeed.”
