Sherrod Brown becomes fourth senator to urge Biden to stop seeking second term
Brown's office did not indicate who the senator supports as Biden's replacement, and said he would not weigh in on the process of picking a new nominee. Brown also believes that Biden should serve out the rest of his term.
Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown on Friday became the fourth senator to officially call for President Joe Biden to stop seeking another term in the White House.
Brown makes the 35th Democratic lawmaker to urge Biden to drop out of the Democratic race, and joins Sens. Jon Tester of Montana, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, and Peter Welch of Vermont in making the plea from the Senate. He is also the 15th Democratic lawmaker this week alone.
“Over the last few weeks, I’ve heard from Ohioans on important issues, such as how to continue to grow jobs in our state, give law enforcement the resources to crack down on fentanyl, protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts, and prevent the ongoing efforts to impose a national abortion ban,” Brown wrote in a statement, per NBC News. “These are the issues Ohioans care about and it is my job to keep fighting for them.”
“I agree with the many Ohioans who have reached out to me,” Brown continued. “At this critical time, our full attention must return to these important issues. I think the President should end his campaign.”
Brown's office did not indicate who the senator supports as Biden's replacement, and said he would not weigh in on the process of picking a new nominee. Brown also believes that Biden should serve out the rest of his term.
A total of 12 lawmakers have now called for Biden to exit the race on Friday, including Heinrich.
