Texas GOP censures Rep. Tony Gonzales over stance on guns, same-sex marriage, border

Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales was censured by his own state's GOP for his voting record on same-sex marriage, gun control and the border. 

The Texas State Republican Executive Committee on Saturday voted during its quarterly meeting in Austin in favor of censuring Gonzales by a 57-5 vote with one abstention, the Texas Republican Party said.

The resolution censuring Gonzales said he voted "in violation of the Principles of the Republican Party of Texas" by joining all Democrats in supporting the "Respect for Marriage" Act to protect gay marriage. The resolution also said the congressman "has failed to support" the Border Safety and Security Act of 2023 and he voted in favor of the "Bipartisan Safer Communities Act," which imposes additional firearms restrictions. 

Gonzales' spokesperson responded to the censure in a statement to Fox News Digital.

"Today, like every day, Congressman Tony Gonzales went to work on behalf of the people of TX-23," the spokesperson said. "He talked to veterans, visited with Border Patrol agents and met constituents in a county he flipped from blue to red. The Republican Party of Texas would be wise to follow his lead and do some actual work."
