Alex Jones ordered to liquidate assets to cover Sandy Hook lawsuit payout
“This is probably the end of Infowars here very, very soon. If not today, in the next few weeks or months,” Jones told reporters before the hearing. “But it’s just the beginning of my fight against tyranny.”
A federal judge on Friday ordered conspiracy theorist and Infowars host Alex Jones to liquidate his personal assets, in order to pay a total of $1.5 billion to families of those killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre.
Jones declared bankruptcy in 2022, after he was ordered to pay the damages, but the judge Friday approved Jones's request to convert his bankruptcy reorganization into a liquidation instead, according to the Associated Press. The families of the 20 children and six staff members who were fatally shot at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, sued Jones because they were harassed and threatened since the shooting.
Judge Christopher Lopez is still considering whether the Infowars' parent company Free Speech Systems should also be forced to liquidate to help repay the costs. But Jones's personal assets will be sold off, except for his primary home in Austin, Texas. Jones has already moved towards selling a ranch in Texas, which is worth an estimated $2.8 million, and his gun collection.
“This is probably the end of Infowars here very, very soon. If not today, in the next few weeks or months,” Jones told reporters before the hearing. “But it’s just the beginning of my fight against tyranny.”
The Infowars host has approximately $9 million in personal assets, according to his most recent financial filings. Free Speech Systems has about $6 million in cash on hand and another $1.2 million in inventory.
The families of the Sandy Hook victims have encouraged Lopez to order the liquidation of Free Speech Systems. Chris Mattei, who represents the families, said the liquidation would “enable the Connecticut families to enforce their $1.4 billion in judgments now and into the future while also depriving Jones of the ability to inflict mass harm as he has done for some 25 years.”
The massive payouts come after Jones falsely claimed the massacre was a hoax perpetuated by the government to take away Americans' guns. Jones has since acknowledged that the shooting occurred.
