Family of Marine killed in Afghanistan files another lawsuit against Alec Baldwin
Baldwin sent the family money after the marine died, but months later accused the family of being involved in the Jan. 6 riot.
The widow and sisters of a Marine who died in Afghanistan during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal last year have filed another $25 million lawsuit against Alec Baldwin, claiming the actor exposed them to hatred online after he accused one of the women of being involved in the Jan. 6 riot.
The case was filed in New York's Southern District Court on Friday by the family of Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum, who was killed with 12 other U.S. service members in Aug. 26, 2021, Kabul airport suicide bombing.
Baldwin sent one of McCollum's sister, Roice McCollum, a check for $5,000 for his widow, Jiennah McCollum, and her baby as a "tribute to a fallen soldier," states the filing obtained by The New York Post.
In January, Baldwin publicly called Roice McCollum an "insurrectionist" after she posted a photo of herself attending a protest in Washington, D.C., on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
"When I sent the $ for your late brother, out of real respect for his service to this country, I didn’t know you were a January 6th rioter," Baldwin directly messaged her, according to the suit.
McCollum responded: "Protesting is perfectly legal in the country and I’ve already had my sit down with the FBI. Thanks, have a nice day!"
The lawsuit also says Baldwin falsely accused Jiennah McCollum of participating in the riot, considering she was not in D.C. that day.
The plaintiffs filed the first lawsuit against Baldwin in Wyoming, where the sisters live, but the case was dismissed in May after the judge ruled she does not have jurisdiction over it because Baldwin lives in New York.
