A former Kansas police chief has been charged in the August 11, 2023 raid of the offices of the Marion County Record.

Gideon Cody, who had resigned from the Marion Police Department about two months after the raid took place, was charged with one count of interference with the judicial process.

The police raided the Marion County Record's office as well as the home of the owner, when they suspected that an employee of the publication may have committed a crime.

The raids drew national condemnation, including from press freedom groups who excoriated police for their actions.

Barry R. Wilkerson, who was appointed a special prosecutor for Marion County, filed the charge on Monday.

Ryan Rosauer, 8th Judicial District Court judge, will preside over the case.
