Paul Pelosi attacker David DePape again gets 30 years after court error prompts resentencing
Body camera footage of the incident saw police arrive at Pelosi's San Francisco home to find the pair both clutching a hammer.
Paul Pelosi attacker David DePape on Tuesday was resentenced to 30 years in prison after a procedural error during his original sentencing prompted a second court appearance.
DePape received 30 years in prison earlier this month in connection with an October 2022 incident in which DePape struck Pelosi with a hammer at his San Francisco home.
During that sentencing, however, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley did not permit DePape to speak in a bid to lower his sentence, The Hill reported. The omission resulted in the second hearing, though DePape received the same sentence.
"The message has to be out there that it’s absolutely unacceptable to our democracy," the judge said.
Body camera footage of the incident saw police arrive at Pelosi's San Francisco home to find the pair both clutching a hammer. During the course of conversing with police, DePape wrested the hammer from Pelosi and struck him with the tool, resulting in a skull fracture.
He had originally entered the premises seeking then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Paul's wife.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed in November of 2022 that DePape was in the United States illegally and had overstayed his visa.
