New York City police make arrest in attack on Jewish man near Times Square

New York City police have arrested a man and several others are being sought in connection with an attack on a Jewish man earlier this week in Times Square.

The attack occurred Thursday following rival pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations and was captured on a video that has been widely shared on social media.

The rally occurred hours before the cease-fire agreement between Israel and the militant group Hamas, after 11 days of fighting with air strikes and rockets. 

Police have identified the man arrested as Waseem Awawdeh, of Brooklyn. They say he used a crutch in the early evening assault. Awawdeh faces charges of second-degree hate crime assault, a second-degree gang assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, according to Reuters.

The victim of the attack is being identified as 29-year-old Joseph Borgen, an accountant from the Upper East Side.

Borgen said was wearing a yarmulke and heading to the demonstration at the time of the attack. 

He sustained a concussion, black eye and bruises all over his body, according to The New York Post.

"The victim was approached by a group of five or six males who knocked him to the ground, assaulted him while making anti-Semitic statements," NYPD Sgt. Jessica McRorie told the wire service. "They punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed and hit him with some crutches during the assault."
