SCOTUS rules in favor of protections for LGBT workers against job discrimination
The decision means workers cannot be fired for being gay
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled, in a 6-3 decision, that federal law protects gay and transgender workers from job discrimination based on their sexuality or sex.
Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch and Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court's four liberal justices in the majority opinion on the case.
The court looked at Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which in addition to protecting workers based on racial discrimination, prohibits discrimination "on the basis of sex."
The court has now determined that this means not just that women may not be treated worse than men and vice versa in the work place, but also that it also prohibits discrimination against LGBT individuals.
