Snapchat parent Snap Inc settled a lawsuit Monday with two teens who accused the company of designing the platform to be addictive, causing their depression, anxiety and eating disorders.

The company was expected to stand trial this week after jury selection began last week in Los Angeles and is part of a larger effort to hold social media companies accountable for being addictive to teenagers who claim Snap, Meta, TikTok and YouTube designed their platforms to encourage compulsive use.

The two teenagers previously settled with Meta, TikTok and YouTube.

"Our ultimate goal is to hold these social media companies accountable for how their actions have impacted millions of children across the country, and these settlements allow us to keep building toward that goal," attorneys John Morgan and Emily Jeffcott, who represent plaintiff K.D.B., said in a statement to Reuters.

KDB is described as an 18-year-old from Mississippi, and the other plaintiff has been identified as SJ, a 16-year-old girl from Illinois. Both have claimed they started using YouTube at age 3 and other platforms at age 9.

A Snap spokesperson said in a statement that the company has built safeguards, launched safety tutorials, partnered with experts and remains committed to “continually strengthening the safety, privacy, and well-being of our community," since the lawsuit.

The companies have rejected claims that their platforms were intended to addict young people, and said they have taken action to make the apps safe places for young people to express themselves.
