Trump recruits former Florida solicitor general for FBI raid case
Prior to signing on with Trump, Kise worked for Foley & Lardner. The firm no longer lists him on its website
Former Florida Solicitor General Chris Kise will represent Donald Trump in the case that led to the FBI's August raid on his Florida estate seeking classified materials he may have removed from the White House.
Kise refused comment to NBC, which cited "two sources with knowledge of the discussions" to confirm his hiring. Other attorneys reportedly refused to work for Trump due to his troublesome relationships with past legal counsel, the outlet noted, again citing anonymous sources.
The former solicitor has previously won four cases before the Supreme Court and earned some notoriety as a political operative during the Florida gubernatorial race in 2018 during which he publicized damaging information about Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum violating state ethics laws, per NBC.
Prior to signing on with Trump, Kise worked for Foley & Lardner. The firm no longer lists him on its website.
Kise's hiring will bolster Trump's representation for this case. Attorneys Evan Corcoran and Jim Trusty are already advising the former president, according to Politico. Trump will have to pay his legal fees out of pocket in this case, a departure from past cases against him in which the Republican National Committee footed the bill.
Trump has filed a request to appoint a "special master" to review the documents the FBI seized from his home, a request the judge has indicated she will likely grant. The Department of Justice is expected to file a response to Trump's request by Tuesday evening.
