Biden discusses migration, drug and weapon trafficking with Mexican president

President Joe Biden discussed how to manage migration and combat drug and weapons trafficking during a call with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The leaders discussed "joint migration management efforts," including efforts to slow migration and expand legal pathways to citizenship, the White House said Tuesday.

They also talked about efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and different ways to prosecute gun traffickers.

A record of more than 2 million illegal migrants have been encountered by U.S. Border Patrol this year.

The Biden administration announced last week that it would begin deporting migrants from Venezuela who enter into the United States to Mexico in a return to the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" policy. The White House also said it would give a pathway to legal entry for 24,000 Venezuelan migrants, many of whom are fleeing the socialist country's disastrous economic conditions.
